GATEWAY Program: Nigeria’s Bold Push to Connect 340,000 Youth to the Global Gig Economy

Share to your family and friends

The global gig economy is expanding at an unprecedented pace—projected to reach $1.85 trillion by 2032. For young Nigerians, this represents a significant opportunity to earn foreign currency, build a career, and escape the constraints of a limited local job market. Yet millions lack the skills, tools, and connections to tap into this potential.

Enter the GATEWAY Program—a five-year national initiative designed to bridge that gap

What Is the GATEWAY Program?

GATEWAY stands for Gigwork Accelerator for Talent Empowerment and Workforce Advancement for Youth. It is a comprehensive five-year initiative implemented by Co-creation HUB (CcHUB) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.

The program’s vision is simple yet transformative: to be a gateway to opportunity, connecting young people to dignified, fulfilling, and sustainable income through the gig economy.

By 2031, GATEWAY aims to reach 340,000 to 400,000 young Nigerians with ecosystem support to secure gig work within six months of completing the program.

Who Is the Program For?

GATEWAY targets young Nigerians aged 18–35 across ten states:

  • Abuja (FCT)
  • Lagos
  • Ogun
  • Oyo
  • Rivers
  • Delta
  • Edo
  • Enugu
  • Kaduna
  • Kano

The program places a deliberate focus on marginalised groups, including:

  • Young women (targeting at least 70% participation)
  • Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
  • Displaced youth

These are the groups that often face the highest barriers to employment—and GATEWAY is designed specifically to include them.

Two Pathways for Different Skill Levels

Not everyone starts from the same place. GATEWAY recognises this with a dual-pathway structure:

Foundations Pathway

For beginners who need to acquire core digital and creative skills before entering the gig market. This track typically takes three to six months to complete.

Growth Pathway

For individuals who already possess digital or creative skills through formal education, vocational training, or self-learning, but are underemployed or lack consistent gig opportunities. This track can be completed in six weeks to two months.

What Skills Will You Learn?

GATEWAY focuses on four high-demand creative digital skills:

  1. Digital Marketing
  2. Graphic Design
  3. UI/UX Design
  4. Video Production and Editing

These skill areas were selected based on demand trends observed across global gig platforms. “We did our research to say what creative digital skills are in top demand, and these four skill sets came up on top,” said Timothy Aluko, Program Lead for the Nigeria GATEWAY Program.

What Does the Program Offer?

GATEWAY provides comprehensive support that goes far beyond traditional training:

Access to Gigs and Earning Opportunities

Direct connections to local and international gig platforms, platform-specific onboarding guidance, and job placement assistance.

Learning Tool Vouchers

Monthly access to computers, software, and internet at participating hubs—for up to six months based on progress and completion of learning milestones.

🛠️ Work Tools Credit

Competitive microloans for laptops, internet dongles, and software. These come with single-digit interest ratesno collateral required, longer moratoriums on payments, and flexible repayment schedules based on earning capacity.

Mentorship and Coaching

Pairing with successful gig workers in your field, regular coaching sessions, expert webinars, and peer-to-peer learning groups.

Enhanced Access to Financial Services

Access to pension schemes designed for gig workers, micro-insurance products for health and device protection, savings plans, and financial wellness tools.

Certification

A Certificate of Completion from the GATEWAY Program, portfolio development support, and professional profile building for gig platforms.

Post-Program Support

12 months of ongoing career development support after securing gig work—including continued access to mentorship, community, and lifelong membership in the GATEWAY alumni network.

Why This Matters Now

Nigeria has one of the largest youth populations in Africa, but formal employment opportunities remain scarce. The online gig economy already accounts for 4.4% to 12.5% of the global labour force, according to the World Bank. Across Africa, countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa account for an estimated 17.5 million online gig workers.

Yet many young Nigerians lack the tools, infrastructure, and training needed to participate effectively.

“If you put that side by side, you realise that the problems also present an opportunity for us to leverage the gig economy,” Aluko noted.

GATEWAY is CcHUB’s answer to closing that gap.

What Program Leaders Are Saying

Ojoma Ochai, Managing Director of CcHUB, called the program “a crucial, life-changing intervention in Nigeria’s youth unemployment challenge.”

“By connecting 340,000 vulnerable young people to high-demand creative digital skills and direct pathways into the global gig economy, we are enabling them to become immediate and sustainable income earners,” she said. “Our commitment goes far beyond certification—we are focused on ensuring participants are successfully transitioned into dignified gig work.”
