How to Retrieve Your Tax ID Using Your NIN

What is a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID)?

A Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) is a unique number jointly issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) in accordance with Nigerian tax laws for the purpose of identifying individuals and entities for tax administration, compliance, and enforcement.

Under Nigeria’s tax administration framework, a Tax ID is not created in isolation.

It is derived from and linked to officially recognized foundational identity systems, including:

  • National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for individuals
  • National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for individuals
  • Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration records for companies, business names, partnerships, and incorporated trustees
  • Other legally recognized identity records for non-residents and special entities

This linkage ensures that every Tax ID corresponds to a verified legal identity, improving accuracy, integrity, and trust in Nigeria’s tax system.

How to Retrieve Your Tax ID Using Your NIN

Do you need your Tax Identification Number (TIN) to open a corporate bank account or file your taxes? If you already have your National Identification Number (NIN), you can easily retrieve your Tax ID online without visiting a tax office.

Follow this simple guide to get your Individual Tax ID through the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) portal.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Visit the Portal: Go to the official FIRS Tax ID portal at https://taxid.firs.gov.ng/.
  2. Select Your Category: On the homepage, click on the button labelled “Individual”.
  3. Enter Your NIN: Look for the “Tax ID Retrieval Method” dropdown menu. Select NIN from the options and type in your National Identification Number.
  4. Start Retrieval: Click on “Retrieve Tax ID.” A pop-up window will appear requesting your personal details.
  5. Verify Your Identity: Enter your First Name, Last Name, and Date of Birth. You must also tick the checkbox to consent to the use of your information for identity verification.
  6. Submit Request: Click the “Submit” button.
  7. View Your Tax ID: Once processed, a confirmation message will appear stating that your NIN has been successfully verified. Your Tax ID will then be displayed on the screen.
